Flying High, Landing Soft

By Brian Hwang, Teaching Professional

Many golfers struggle to hit high, soft chip shots with enough spin to hold the green. For this demonstration, I set up a 30-yard shot on TrackMan. I need to loft it over the bunker and stop the ball right away. Here’s how it’s done:

1. Set up open: Notice how my feet are aiming left of my target. Also, notice in second image how the ball is aligned just inside my left heel. The clubface is open, which allows me to use more of the club’s bounce. My weight is shifted to my left side.

2. Use an outside-to-inside swing path so the clubface points toward the target and the ball travels straight.

3. Finish with your weight on your left foot.

The result: A nice close shot.
