When working with new students, I almost always start with getting into the proper neutral posture at address. This is a crucial component in a strong swing, and one that many players need help with.
The two flawed postures I see the most are the “C” posture and the “S” posture. A player in the C posture will be slightly hunched over, with rounded shoulders, which leads to a limited backswing. A player in the S posture will be too upright, with an arched back that leads to a limited hip rotation.
To break people of these bad habits, I start with the basics, and use our K-Vest biofeedback technology to illustrate their incorrect positions and ingrain the proper position in the player’s muscle memory.
In the images below, I’m wearing K-Vest, and my body position is being translated into a 3-D avatar on the screen. When I’m in the C position, my upper body is too bent, with my head below the green target line and an angle of 57 degrees. In the S position, my upper body is too upright, with my head above the green target line and an angle of 28 degrees.
After illustrating these incorrect positions, I tell my students how to get into the correct position. It’s really simple. First, stand up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold the club straight out in front of you. Then bend your knees slightly and tilt your upper body until the club is on the ground. As you can see from the images below, my K-Vest avatar is in perfect position after going through this simple setup routine.
