Meghan Costello is our Club Operator and Program & Events Coordinator. She recently fielded some questions from Executive Director and Co-Founder Farrell Evans.
FE: What’s a typical day like for you at the Learning Center?
MC: One of the things I enjoy the most about working at The Learning Center is that there is no typical day. Whether it’s meeting new students or seeing the progress the young men of the Foundation are making, every day presents a new challenge, which makes working here so much fun.
FE: What are some of the challenges of managing our Learning Center, where many of the patrons are new to the game?
MC: I don’t know if it’s a challenge, but it’s sometimes difficult to convey just how much information our technology can provide to teach a new student or even improve a more experienced player’s game. The TrackMan simulators and SAM PuttLab are such powerful tools that can really transform a student’s game. Whether students want to work with a teacher or come in to play a course on their own, there are many options for golfers of all skill levels.
FE: You played college golf at St. Leo (Fla.) University. What was your most memorable experience as a player?
MC: I was very lucky to have the opportunity to play college golf in Florida. Not only did I get to escape the snow and cold weather, but I was able to play courses all over the Sunshine State. I would have to say my most memorable experience was our spring break trip to California my sophomore year. Our team played in an event hosted in Monterey Bay, and we finished in the top 5. After the tournament, our coach drove us along the coast to Pebble Beach and eventually San Francisco. Although we didn’t play Pebble Beach, the 17-Mile Drive and standing near the 18th green is a memory that I will always treasure.
FE: Although you grew up just over the George Washington Bridge in Bergen County, you hadn’t spent much time in Harlem. What are your early impressions of the neighborhood?
MC: I’m really enjoying the neighborhood. There are countless restaurants nearby to choose from and they all have a great vibe and ambiance. Besides visiting new restaurants, I really enjoy walking around and seeing the street art on many of the buildings.
FE: What’s your dream foursome?
MC: Rickie Fowler, Michael Jordan and Dustin Johnson … at the Bridge, of course!
FE: What’s your New Year’s wish for The Learning Center?
MC: To keep expanding our programs and to continue making The Learning Center more accessible for everyone in our community.
