Braylan Stewart is a 12-year-old 7th grader in our after school program who lives in Harlem with his father. He joined our program this fall and recently fielded some questions from Charlie Hanger, the digital content manager for our Foundation and Learning Center.
CH: What’s your favorite subject in school?
BS: I like science because we do cool experiments, like trying to find an amoeba in lake water. We got a small cup and filled it up at a lake in the park. Then we went back to school and put a bit of the water on a slide. We looked at the slide under a microscope and saw an amoeba. We found it!
CH: What do you want to do when you grow up?
BS: I want to be a soccer player and/or an actor for TV and movies. My favorite soccer team is Barcelona, and my favorite player is Messi. I’d like to act because I think I could make shows that kids would like, and because it just seems like a fun job.
CH: What’s your favorite part of what we do at The Bridge Golf Foundation?
BS: The STEM classes and math lessons. I like science at school, and I like science here. I really liked when we learned how airplanes work and the four forces that act on an airplane — gravity, lift, thrust, and drag. But I don’t want to be a pilot. I don’t like turbulence, and I’m scared of extreme altitudes.
CH: You recently got to go to the Heisman Trophy Gala, where The Bridge Golf Foundation was featured as a grant recipient. What did you think?
BS: I don’t really love football, but I got to see myself on the big screen, and they had great food. My steak was tiny, but it was good, and they served us lots of other stuff — appetizers, salad with bacon bits, bread, mashed potatoes, dessert. I saw Tim Tebow, Baker Mayfield and Tony Dorsett. I’d heard of him before because my dad loves football and the Dallas Cowboys.
CH: Who is your Bigger Pie mentor, and what are you working on with him?
My mentor is Daniel Aires. My personal goal is to learn 180 new words. So far I’m at 133. My academic goal is to get at least a 96% average across all classes. Last semester I got a 93%, and I think I’ve improved on that.
CH: What are some of your other interests and hobbies?
BS: I like to make YouTube videos, and I like to draw. The best drawing I’ve ever done was of an eye. It was really realistic.
